Its happening for real! Plans are in the works to make a sequel to the successful 1980 comedy “9 to 5.” Jane Fonda has said she will serve as executive producer of the film, but also intends to reprise her role on the big screen with her original co-stars, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin. “Right now, Dolly, Lily and I intend to be there,” Fonda told reporters Wednesday at the Television Critics Association press event. Jane Fonda says all three original co-stars “from 9 to 5,” who have remained friends since making the 1980 film, have signed on for the sequel. The speculation about a “9 to 5” sequel emerged earlier this year when 20th Century Fox expressed interest in “Angie Tribeca” star Rashida Jones interpretation of a script with the original films screenwriter, Patricia Resnick. At the time, Parton said she would be open to a reboot of the beloved workplace comedy, saying it would make sense following the #MeToo movement. The original film followed the lives of three women who worked in the same office under an incompetent and chauvinistic boss, played by Dabney Coleman. Fonda said the work environment has not improved much since the films release in 1980. “Im sorry to say that today the situation is worse,” she said. “Today, much of the workforce is hired by an outside company, who do you talk to if you have a problem?” The “9 to 5” reboot could be underway Mar.01.201800:33 Fonda also said that the internet and social media have made it easier for companies to spy on their employees. But she expressed optimism that the #MeToo movement, along with campaigns like Times Up, will eventually change things for women in the workplace. “I think sexual harassment will tend to decrease,” she said. “Guys are scared.” “9 to 5” was a box office success after its release. It eventually inspired a short-lived television series and a Tony-nominated Broadway musical.
