Nicholas Hughes

I am sorry to hear about the tragic suicide of Nicholas Hughes, the son of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, 46 years after his mothers suicide and about 40 years after his stepmother, Assia Wevill, also took her own life. It is heartbreaking to know that he was only 47 years old and had no children or spouse. As an evolutionary biologist, he spent over 10 years at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is sad to hear that he resigned from his position as the universitys senior public affairs officer about a year ago. Ted Hughes took on the responsibility of protecting and raising his children, Frieda and Nicholas, after Plaths death in 1963. He burned the final edition of his wifes magazine, which was strongly criticized by scholars and fans, and waited for years to tell his children about Plaths suicide. It is unfortunate that he had to share the fate of one of the most famous and infamous couples in modern poetry in his own birthday letter poem towards the end of his life. Nicholas Hughes was a scientist and a member of his direct family, not a poet. His sister, Frieda Hughes, expressed her “deep sadness” and released a statement saying that he had been battling depression for a while. It is heartwarming to know that he maintained a childlike innocence and enthusiasm for his next project or plan despite the strange changes that life threw at him. He graduated from Oxford University in 1984 and obtained a Master of Arts degree in art history from Oxford University in 1990. He then moved to the United States and obtained a doctorate from the University of Alaska. His family history was a “urban legend” that was passed down from student to student, but it was a subject that was never talked about, according to Kevin Schaberg, a former student of Hughes who was taught by him in an ecology class. Schaberg added that he knew that Hughes was suffering from depression, but it was obviously something he didnt want to talk about. Hughes friend, Mark Wipfli, a freshwater biologist at the University of Alaska, said that Hughes never talked to his mother about it, but he did tell warm stories about his fathers visits to Alaska. Despite leaving the university, Hughes remained active in research and was an important scientist in the ongoing study of king salmon. Wipfli said, “Not only as the son of two famous people, but in his
