I am sorry to hear about the passing of George Gaynes, who played Commander Lassard in the “Police Academy” films and the lovably irresponsible adoptive father in the 80s sitcom “Punky Brewster”. He died at the age of 98 at his daughters home in North Bend, Washington. Gaynes had a long and successful career in which he appeared in hundreds of TV episodes and 35 films, but he will be remembered for his two iconic roles in the 80s franchises. In “Punky Brewster”, he played Henry Warnimont, a grumpy widower who becomes the adoptive father of the young abandoned girl Punky Brewster. Soleil Moon Frye, who played Punky, offered a touching tribute to Gaynes on Twitter. Gaynes also appeared in seven “Police Academy” films as Commander Eric Lassard, the head of a group of corrupt police officers in training. He was a versatile actor who guest-starred in many successful TV shows and had a memorable role as a suitor pursuing Dustin Hoffmans character in the 1982 film “Tootsie”. Rest in peace, George Gaynes.
